01Is this for you

You are probably reading this because one of these is true.

  • 01

You get some reports sent, but no one walks you through them and you're not using any financial data for decision making.

  • 02

You're not quite sure what your gross margins are, or what your overall profit is month to month.

  • 03

You don't know what your runway is, or whether you may run out of cash soon if you continue with business as usual.

  • 04

Even though sales are the highest they have ever been, cash is still always tight.

  • 05

Your board and investors are asking more questions than you can comfortably answer.

If you turn over less than £1m per year or you're looking for someone to do your VAT return or personal tax return, I am the wrong person. Feel free to still reach out though, as I'll be able to point you in the right direction.

02Your options

Why the usual options fall short.

Most businesses past £1m try some mix of these. Each one covers part of what you need, but none of them covers all of it.

01
Usual way

Rely only on your accountant

Why it falls short

Accountants have an important job, but it's not their job to cover the whole finance function.

02
Usual way

Hire a CFO who has only worked for big companies

Why it falls short

A big-corporate CFO does not know how a £2m business works.

03
Usual way

Get a CFO who only does the strategy, so you need a second person for the hands-on work

Why it falls short

Without doing the hands-on work, the CFO has a lot less context, so the advice will be worse. It's also more costly, and you have more people to liaise with.

04
Usual way

Bring someone in on the same day every week, or someone billing by the hour or day

Why it falls short

An issue comes up on a Thursday and you have to wait until next Tuesday for help. Or you hold back from asking for help or advice when you need it, because you're worried about running up a big bill.

05
Usual way

Discuss problems with your family or your team

Why it falls short

Your family doesn't have the context on everything happening in your business. Your team shouldn't carry your worries, and might start looking for new jobs if you tell them you're worried about making payroll next month.

06FAQ

Questions I get asked.

Do you replace my accountant?

No. Your accountant and I handle different parts of the finance function. Accountants handle compliance: the accounts filed with Companies House and HMRC, tax returns, VAT and so on. I work on the strategic, forward-looking parts like cash flow forecasting, decision making and fundraising. When I come on board I work alongside them, and most of my clients keep the accountant they already have.

How much time do you actually spend on my business?

As much as is needed to fulfil the scope of work we agree. Typically I spend between 2 and 6 days per month with each business I work with, and it often varies from month to month depending on how much there is to do.

Do you have a fixed day per week or month for each of your clients?

No. I work flexibly across the month, and whenever a client needs me I try to help as soon as possible rather than waiting for the next day we agreed I'd be there.

What does it cost?

From £2,000 per month, as a fixed retainer depending on scope.

What systems do you work in?

Typically Xero or QuickBooks, plus Excel and Google Sheets. There are no additional systems you need to spend money on when I come on board.

Do you work with businesses outside Bath and London?

Yes. Most of the work is done remotely, but I try to see every client in person at least a few times per year where possible.

What is the minimum commitment?

There isn't one. You can cancel any time, and you just pay for the month you're in.

What happens to my data?

I sign an NDA before I see any numbers. Wherever possible I work inside your own systems, and anything I do keep is stored securely and deleted when we stop working together.
